Uncommon Exercises & Sustainable Fun: Go Green Get Fit

This post is part of the 12-week Go Green, Get Fit Challenge as part of the EcoMom Alliance Sustain YourSelf™ Program presented by PlanetShoes.com.

I’ve been an admitted slacker in my fitness goals. I give myself credit for activities that *do* keep me fit, but I haven’t been committed to any formal exercise. After attending a music festival this past weekend, I realized that the summer lends itself to fitness (when the heat isn’t making even water sports unbearable), and I’m throwing any ideas of formal exercise out the window. Physical fitness can be found without even trying! Let me tell you about my weekend workout:

Hubs and I decided, last minute, to attend Floyd Fest, a family-friendly music festival in Virginia that focuses on sustainable practices and a feel-good vibe. What does this have to do with exercise?

Packing the car: 100 calories burned
Hauling our gear to the campsite (backpacker-style, everything in our packs): 91 calories burned
Pushing a stroller uphill and downhill: 200 calories burned daily
Chasing a toddler around the playground: 150 calories burned daily
Dancing with said toddler (lifting and spinning): 48 calories burned daily
Hula-hooping: 50 calories burned
Walking around the festival: 300 calories burned daily
Hauling gear back to the car: 91 calories burned
Unloading: 100 calories burned

Add to this the general calories burned by the daily activities of living in a campsite each day, plus the strength garnered from all the lifting and unloading, and festival-going can be a great way to keep up with a workout routine! Please note that I didn’t do much dancing. Had we not had a toddler in tow, I would have danced my butt off after-hours :)

I used calorie calculator at HealthStatus.com to estimate these totals.

How about you? What are some uncommon ways you find to boost your fitness?

I am always amazed at the amount of exercise I get at festivals. It’s the most fabulous kind (in my opinion). PS – surprised at the small amount of calories estimated for dancing with at toddler; boo. I think you can at least triple that! ;-)

Love this post! It brings back memories of my last music festival (which was way too long ago) and reminds me about how they feed your soul and help you feel good and healthy!. Thanks!
