Off-Topic Tuesday: Advent Activity Calendar
I’m not a crafty person. In fact, I will go so far as to say that utilizing fine motor skills in tasks such as sewing, cutting, threading, weaving, knitting, gluing, etc. gives me a bout of anxiety. (Seriously, I’ve elevated my heart rate just by focusing too hard on plucking my eyebrows. The Concentration!). But a gal’s gotta give in sometime, especially when she is the sort who is known to say, “Oh, shit, I could just MAKE THAT!” I’ve always drooled over the pre-fab Advent calendars and countdown garlands which grace the pages of expensive home ware...
Read MoreOff-Topic Tuesday: The North Star #OTT
I generally scour the children’s bookshelves of our local library for interesting reads that won’t leave Bear OR Mom and Dad bored. I picked up The North Star recently and tear up every time I read it. The North Star, by Peter H. Reynolds, is the story of a boy who begins a wonderful journey. He discovers, explores, and experiences, and questions the details of life. One day, a convincing cat (in a move similar to The Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland) urges the boy to “hurry up” and start his REAL life’s journey–down a clearly-marked path through the...

Apparently, today is Global Belly Laugh Day. I’m a fan of laughing, and we all know it’s good for your health, so COUNT ME IN! Since most belly-laughable moments in life generally aren’t as funny in a retelling (remind me of this from time-to-time, though. I’m really good for saying, “Ah–guess you had to be there!” and generally ruining anyone’s sense of focus), I’ll share some of my all-time favorite YouTube hits: 1. C’mon. I taught high school English. Moreover, I’m an even bigger nerd than you may realize. THUSLY, I love...
Read MoreOff-Topic Tuesday: Do you know what #autism looks like? #OTT
Do you know what autism looks like? I can’t say that I do. After teaching in a public high school for seven years, I can maybe say I can spot signs of kiddos who have problems with social cues. I can identify a student who might exhibit signs of what might be autism. I know when to refer a student to a professional who can provide more support, if support is necessary. However, if simply passing someone on the street, there is generally no way to tell if a person is autistic, let alone on the Autism Spectrum. And what does that really mean, anyway? Let me back up. A few weeks ago, I...
Read MoreJoin Me in 2012!
The new year is bringing a few inspiring events in which I hope you will join me! The first is the Get Real in 2012 Challenge where the folks at Once a Month Mom are challenging you to change your eating to an unprocessed diet. If you’ve been following along, you know I participated in the October Unprocessed Challenge put on by Andrew Wilder at Eating Rules. One of my criticisms of October Unprocessed was that it seemed daunting to those unfamiliar with unprocessed eating and many people (moms, particularly) didn’t give it a fair chance. Although the Get Real Challenge is a...
