DIY Sunscreen in a Pump: Safe & Cost-Effective

Sunscreen is expensive, especially if you’re purchasing a brand that is natural and safe (see my picks for safe sunscreens that work). There’s no way around it: ounce-for-ounce, safer ingredients are priced higher. If you wear sunscreen on a daily basis, if you have active kids, or if you just like to save a buck, making your own sunscreen might be the cheapest, the safest, and the most effective method of blocking UV rays.

I had no idea that making sunscreen is so simple.

Four ingredients are all it takes, and you can get them all on Amazon (if you can’t find them locally):

  • beeswax,

  • coconut oil,

  • almond oil,

  • & zinc oxide!

Watch Renee from MadeOn Hard Lotion explain the process:

See? Simple, right? The ingredients, if bought on Amazon, amount to about $44, and you can make two batches (more if you purchase more almond oil or use olive oil). You’ll fill a 10-ounce container, making this recipe breakdown to $2.20/ounce. Seem expensive? Think about this: most natural sunscreens are well over $10 for a 2 or 3-ounce tube, ringing in at $4-5/ounce! I can see this being an easy way to have sunscreen on-hand for guests, for a kid’s outdoor party, or as a moisturizing companion to your beauty routine. One caveat: because it contains zinc oxide, the sunscreen will give a *slight* white veil on the skin. However, if you’re sick of worrying about ingredients, this is a sure-fire way to be sure your family is safe from toxins while enjoying the sun!

      Hi hn–
The process of making the sunscreen belongs entirely to the folks at MadeOn Hard Lotion. You can check out their site, ebooks, kits, and info HERE.

This is fantastic. I wondered if anyone had tried to do this yet. I will have to pull some of these ingredients together and try them out. Anything DIY suits my fancy. Thanks so much for sharing.
