I generally scour the children’s bookshelves of our local library for interesting reads that won’t leave Bear OR Mom and Dad bored. I picked up The North Star recently and tear up every time I read it.

The North Star, by Peter H. Reynolds, is the story of a boy who begins a wonderful journey. He discovers, explores, and experiences, and questions the details of life. One day, a convincing cat (in a move similar to The Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland) urges the boy to “hurry up” and start his REAL life’s journey–down a clearly-marked path through the woods. The boy abandons his original thoughts and steps onto the path. From here, his journey grows less-enjoyable, more murky, dark. He steps off the path, at times, to find enlightenment in simple joys, only to be called back by the cat. The boy predictably makes his way out of the woods and there is a pleasant ending, but you need to experience the telling of this tale for yourself. It spoke to me.
As a person who has metaphorically “stepped off the path” in a couple of areas of life, I find comfort and meaning in a storybook (or guidebook?) that encourages original thought and uniqueness.
You can purchase The North Star on Amazon, or, better yet, search for it in your local library. The sweet illustrations and simplistic language make it enjoyable for all ages. This title will be one for our permanent collection!
