I’ve always liked a healthy breakfast. As a kid, my favorite cereals were Cracklin’ Oat Bran and Grape Nuts. Why, yes, I had Progeria of the digestive tract, apparently. I liked me sum’ fiber! Let’s skip over my bout in high school where I couldn’t stomach breakfast before 10:00 (why is that? manic hormones? disrupted sleep patterns?) and the couple of years in college when I would down an entire Lumberjack Slam from Denny’s. Right. Skipping ahead… As I grew older and worked in restaurants, I grew to appreciate a perfectly-cooked egg or a beautifully-prepared quiche. Breakfast moved beyond cereal and milk. (Do you have that G-Love song stuck in your head now, too?) However, when I had my son and went back to work, breakfast became a meal-on-the-fly. I found something that was filling, delicious, and warmed me on cold mornings when I was leaving my son in his cozy pj’s while I sat shivering in my lonely, cold vehicle. (See why I had to resign? 🙂 )
So, here it is, Savory Oatmeal, just in time for the colder months.
Savory Oatmeal
1/2 c. oats
1 c. water
Mix these two and microwave on HIGH for 2 minutes. (Better yet, follow your package directions and cook on the stovetop if you have the time!)
Stir into cooked oatmeal:
1/2-1 Tablespoon Bragg’s Liquid Aminos (Salty)
1-2 Tablespoons of olive oil (or flax) (Fatty)
1-2 Tablespoons Nutritional Yeast (Cheesy)
By the way: this trio is my go-to for seasoning ANYTHING. Try it on rice, quinoa, vegetables.
Other toss-ins:
-handful of nuts (protein!)
-banana
-frozen fruit (omit the Liquid Aminos)

My favorite cozy breakfast is SOUP! Butternut squash is the perfect morning comfort food for me, but sometimes I like a little miso with brown rice on the side.
I love savory oatmeal! Sometimes I add hot sauce, too.

yummmm, I love making steel cut oats with apples in the crock pot the night before.

I’ve been meaning to get a smaller crockpot just for that purpose!

Love steel cut oatmeal, would like to know how long do you cook the oatmeal in your crockpot, when you start and stop it.
Thanks,
Phyllis C.

I like 2-minute cooked oats (not overcooked, nutty) with cinnamon, apple pieces and a banana added. Maybe a couple of dates, cut up or a little maple syrup.
But I also like eat a lot of granola and Trader Joe’s flaxseed and other cereals with rice milk,
maybe 4 times a week. Then some eggs with a slice of toast.
Am I killing myself? I’m 86 and exercise 20 minutes before breakfast every day.
So far so good.

I think the best way to prepare oatmeal is with a little salt and either cinnamon, maple syrup, honey, fruit or, preferably, brown sugar. The local Korean market sells something they call “black sugar”, which is darker and even better. Of course I don’t expect anyone who reads this sort of website to agree. They are undoubtedly the kind of people who only eat weird stuff such as “Liquid Aminos” and “Nutritional Yeast”, whatever they are. And why would anybody want to put any kind of cooking oil in oatmeal?
