Simply Grilling, by Jennifer Chandler, is a cookbook full of easy, quick, casual, and healthy recipes that are appealing to a variety of diners. Chandler has created an accessible repertoire of delights that makes the perfect introduction to grilling menus that go beyond the standard hamburgers, hot dogs, and bbq chicken.
To really give the cookbook an appropriate test, I handed it to our resident grillmaster: the Hubs. He allowed me an evening of relaxation while he chose a menu for dinner and executed it to perfection. The recipes were easy to follow, he said, and the color photos made it simple to envision how the meal should appear. Hubs chose to cook Grouper Tacos with Jalapeno-Lime Slaw and a side of Charred Corn. Let me tell you, he rocked it!
Each of the recipes in Simply Grilling includes a description of the recipe, a simple-to-follow list of ingredients and directions, serving size, and extras such as cooking tips, suggested sides, “do ahead” ideas, and variations on the recipe. With options from the categories of Starters, Poultry, Meat, Seafood, Salads, Sandwiches, Vegetables & Sides, and “Sweet Endings,” it is easy to organize a menu for any event. Chandler also includes a helpful introduction on the basics of grilling, explaining direct vs. indirect heat, cooking temperatures, Marinades, Rubs, and Sauces 101, and typical grilling tools. In short, Simply Grilling is no-fail for the grilling novice!
But don’t let the word “novice” scare you from this book if you’re an experienced chef. Simply Grilling includes scrumptious recipes to surprise a seasoned griller, too, like Lamb Loin Chops with Mint Salsa Verde, Caribbean Grilled Shrimp with Pineapple Salsa, Korean Barbecue Lettuce Wraps, and Grilled Figs with Honey Mascarpone.
Simply Grilling would make the perfect Father’s Day gift for a special guy who loves to cook and appreciates fresh flavor!
