Using Spices in New Ways

Thanks for visiting Healthful Mama today! If you Subscribe to HealthfulMama by Email, I’ll send you my Good Choice Shopping List to help you stay on track with healthful eating. Enjoy!

Quick Tip: try switching out your usual spices with spices you haven’t used before or don’t use often. A change will excite your palette and turn boring standbys into something new!

Some of my favorites include:

-cardamom
-Chinese 5 Spice
-coriander
-garam masala

Some ideas:

-Use cardamom in place of cinnamon. Try it in oatmeal, in an apple cake, or even in savory dishes that feature fruit.

-Try Chinese 5 Spice on kale chips. (Wash and dry kale. Chop into pieces. Drizzle with olive oil, salt, and 5 Spice powder. Bake on a parchment-lined cookie sheet at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes.)

-Put coriander on top of cauliflower before baking it.

-Give roasted carrots delicious flavor by sprinkling them with garam masala.

What are some of your favorite spices?

I just used garam masala for the first time last week. I can’t believe I had never tried it. My favorite spice is definitely nutmeg because it can go sweet or savory.

Have you ever tried a little nutmeg in macaroni & cheese? My mom used to always put a large pinch into the sauce (made of sharp cheeses) and it really brings out the flavor!
