If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you’ll know that I’m not a fan of conventional American medicine and I prefer finding a home remedy over a pharmaceutical solution to illness. But I only know what has worked for me in the past, and when sickness befalls a child, one often doesn’t have the time to hunt for a natural solution based on questionable internet resources. Additionally, children are not our tiny science experiments, and parents want to know WHY something will work for their young one. Most Americans were raised in a culture of conventional medicine, so it is unsettling to go to an untried natural remedy in times of need. (For example, one might have been given Tylenol for fevers as a child, so that is what one may turn to versus an alternative treatment.) Because holistic medicine and natural remedies are not recognized by most states’ medical boards, it can be difficult to find a natural medicine practitioner unless one lives in certain areas of the country. This is why I was so pleased to find Treatment Alternatives for Children by Lawrence Rosen, MD, and Jeff Cohen, author and holistic parent. The book provides alternate ideas for common childhood ailments, in a clear and concise format, and even provides the scientific reasoning behind each treatment (for you skeptics out there 😉 ).
I appreciate a well-organized reference, and Treatment Alternatives for Children is simple to use. Ailments from Acne, to Chicken Pox, to High Cholesterol, to Swollen Glands are listed alphabetically at the front of the book. Once one has found the page with her child’s particular ailment, the authors have provided: causes and symptoms of the ailment, the conventional course of treatment, a natural, homeopathic and/or holistic alternative to the conventional treatment, and two or three additional natural treatments to consider. Each treatment is followed by a section entitled, “Science Says,” where the scientific rationale for the treatment is explained by Dr. Rosen. The book also includes a handy index and an helpful works cited section to support the scientific explanations.
I can already tell that Treatment Alternatives for Children will become one of my prized references. Just looking at a common childhood ailment, ear infection, in the book provides an herbal remedy, explained by a holistic practitioner, facts about ear infections, the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation for treatment, and five other solutions to help ease your child’s suffering.
This book will sit alongside my other references on natural healing, and I’m sure I will refer to it often. I am quite pleased to have such a wonderful resource aimed specifically at treatments for children. If you’re interested in learning more about natural treatments for your child, Treatment Alternatives for Children is the perfect source. It would make a fantastic gift for new parents, too!
